For the last four years Shamika's founder and president, Robert Vivian, has been seeking business opportunities in the field of natural resources in Central Africa. The major changes that took place in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 12 months allowed him to recognize high-yield mining sectors, made available to developers in this emerging African country under the New Mining Code sponsored by the World Bank.
Shamika Resources was incorporated in Canada in 2006; then in January 2007, a Congolese subsidiary, Shamika Congo Kalehe Sprl, was constituted and an office was opened in Goma.
Shortly after Joseph Kabila was elected President through the first democratic election in 40 years, Shamika was ready to apply for its first mining claims under the New Mining Code.
In a year, Shamika had secured 720 mining blocks, amounting to a total of 658 km2, in several provinces of the Eastern part of DRC, mostly in the heart of the Kibara Belt, a geological structure well known for its exceptional mineralization. Other permits are being negociated over 2953 other blocks covering 2698 km2.
Shamika intends to make the very best use of its “first-mover advantage” in order to secure as many concessions as allowed under Congolese Law.
Shamika’s challenges in DRC is to ensure a positive contribution to local communities by reducing poverty, creating sustainable development and enhancing respect of human rights. In pursuing these objectives, Shamika will develop in collaboration with all stakeholders a strong Social and Environmental Program inspired by the Ten United Nations Global Compact Principals and the UN Norms for Business, witch include human rights, labor rights and environment concerns.
